GRICE BAY
PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK (Long Beach
section)
Grice Bay is a
popular destination in the Pacific Rim National Park - Long
Beach section - for many marine enthusiasts like boaters, kayakers,
seabird watchers and photographers.
The easy access boat launch, ocean
views, and parking lot tend to be a big draw. The Grice Bay
area is mainly seen as a boat launch to many. There is, however,
a picnic table area, pit toilets, a large parking lot and a
raised beachfront for excellent marine viewing opportunities.
The beachfront is above sea level - an ideal situation for many
who arrive at the bay with lounge chairs anxious to sit back
and relax and spend some quality time enjoying the island and
wildlife views. The bird watchers, with binoculars and cameras
in hand, analyze the horizon looking for wildlife.
Some boaters and kayakers use Grice
Bay as a launching point to access Tofino Inlet exploring Cannery
Bay, Tranquil Inlet or Kennedy River. Long haul boaters and
kayakers head out traveling up Fortune Channel to visit Dawley
Passage Provincial Park, the Big Cedar Trail on Meares Island
or to set anchor in Mosquito Harbour and have a serene moment.
Mainly boaters and very ambitious
kayakers launch from Grice Bay to access Clayoquot Sound. A
beautiful route, first, navigating Browning Passage, through
the many smaller islet islands and then around the bigger islands
like Vargas and Flores Islands into the heart of the Clayoquot
Sound.
All visitors to the park must have
a Park Use Permit.
How to get to Grice Bay:
From the Pacific Rim Hwy look for the road signs indicating
the Grice Bay. Turn on Grice Bay Road and drive to the very
end of the road to the boat launch.
